The Saloon Rating Course is specifically designed for candidates aspiring to work in the hospitality and catering department of merchant ships. The course includes a basic orientation in maritime duties followed by extensive training in cookery, food service, hygiene, maintenance of kitchen equipment, and safety precautions on board a vessel.
Upon successful completion, candidates are eligible to work as Chief Cook or Catering Crew on board merchant navy ships.

Educational Qualification:

Passed 10th standard with a minimum of 40% marks in Maths and Science

Minimum 40% marks in English at 10th, 11th, or 12th level

Not exceeding 25 years on the date of course commencement

5 years relaxation for SC/ST candidates

Must be medically fit as per the standards of the Directorate General of Shipping

Medical examination must be done by a DG Shipping approved doctor

Written Test and Interview conducted by the institute

Medical Fitness Test approved by DG Shipping
π Course Structure:

Pre-Sea Training:
Duration: 6 months
Content: 4 weeks of basic orientation + 21 weeks of training in cookery, food preparation, service, utensil care, and kitchen safety
Certification: Pre-Sea Training Certificate (Approved by DG Shipping) -
On-Board Training:
Duration: 9 months
Stipend: USD $200β$400/month
Role: Sail as a Trainee Cook or Catering Assistant

πΌ Sponsorship Requirement:
This course is generally non-sponsored. However, various shipping companies visit institutes for campus recruitment of catering crew. Candidates are strongly advised to check the previous campus placement records of the institute for transparency.
