DG Shipping
What is DG Shipping?

Safety of life and ships at sea

Development of coastal shipping and augmentation of shipping tonnage
-
Examination and certification of Merchant Navy officers
-
Supervision and control of allied offices under its jurisdiction
Objectives of DG Shipping:
-
Administration of merchant shipping laws and regulations
-
Ensuring safety of life and vessels at sea
-
Development and promotion of Indian shipping
-
Implementation of international maritime conventions
-
Provision of training facilities for officers and ratings of the Merchant Navy
Sponsorship: Why It Is Crucially Important
Sponsorship is essentially a guarantee of on-board placement for cadets, which is a mandatory requirement by DG Shipping (or equivalent bodies) for completing the on-board training necessary to obtain a Certificate of Competency (COC). This certificate is essential for becoming a licensed officer or engineer in the Merchant Navy.
After completing on-board training and securing the COC, cadets are eligible to be placed as Deck Officers or Marine Engineers aboard merchant ships.
How to Obtain Sponsorship?
To get sponsored, candidates must go through a selection process conducted by DG-approved RPSL (Recruitment and Placement Service License) companies, usually in collaboration with DG Shipping-approved maritime institutes. The selection process typically consists of four stages:
- Written Test (Offline or Online)
- Psychometric / 16 PF Test
- Personal Interview
- Medical Examination (by a DG Shipping-approved doctor)
Candidates who clear all four stages are declared “SPONSORED” by the company and are issued an official Sponsorship Letter.
Why is Sponsorship Mandatory for DNS Leading to B.Sc. Nautical Science?
As per DG Shipping circulars, you cannot enroll in the Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) leading to a B.Sc. in Nautical Science without sponsorship. The reason is:
- This course includes 18 months of mandatory onboard training in the second phase.
- Without sponsorship, you will not be placed onboard, and hence, you will not be able to complete your degree from IMU or obtain your COC.
Why Sponsorship Before Joining the Course is Important?
Courses like B.Tech in Marine Engineering and B.Sc in Nautical Science are generally non-sponsored programs, meaning that shipping companies usually visit the institute campus for cadet recruitment only during the final semester. This creates uncertainty for candidates regarding their placement and on-board training. That’s why we strongly recommend obtaining sponsorship before joining such courses. If you plan to join a course without sponsorship, it is crucial to:
-
Carefully verify the placement records of the institute
-
Make pre-arrangements for your on-board training in advance
We always suggest candidates secure sponsorship beforehand because having a sponsorship eliminates the stress of job hunting and ensures a smooth transition into the industry. With a sponsorship in hand, you are already guaranteed a placement for the essential on-board training, which is a critical requirement for obtaining your Certificate of Competency (COC) and launching your career in the Merchant Navy.
