About Indian Maritime University

What is IMU (Indian Maritime University)?

The ever-increasing global demand for Indian seafarers is a testament to the high-quality maritime education and training provided in India. However, in recent years, India has faced stiff competition from countries like the Philippines, China, and Bangladesh. Therefore, there is an urgent need to upgrade India’s maritime training capacity and capabilities to maintain its leading position in the sector and to meet the projected global shortage of 27,000 officers by the year 2027.

Additionally, India aims to increase its share in the global maritime manpower fleet from the current 6% to at least 20%. With the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries’ share (currently 29%) declining due to a lack of interest among their youth in maritime careers, this presents a significant opportunity for India. By closely aligning the university’s efforts with local, regional, and national developmental issues, this opportunity can benefit both society and the maritime industry.
