Deck Cadet Course (CERT HE/DIP HE)

Overview:

The Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE) in Nautical Science (including preparation for STCW Officer of the Watch Certificate) provides a pathway to academic qualifications and, with further study in the UK, is an MCA-approved route to becoming a Merchant Navy Deck Officer. Assessment and quality monitoring are conducted under the authority of SAMET and LJMU, UK.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Minimum 10+2 pass in PCM, PCB, or Commerce stream

  • B.Sc. graduates and Engineering (B.E./B.Tech.) graduates may also apply

    • Minimum 60% or 80% marks in the final year of B.Sc or Engineering

    • Physics must be one of the subjects during the B.Sc course

  • Must be fluent in written and spoken English

  • Age Limit: Not exceeding 27 years on the date of commencement of trainingedical Fitness:

  • Eyesight: 6/6 with no color blindness

  • Must be medically fit as per ILO and MCA UK medical standards

Selection Procedure:

  1. Qualify written and interview tests conducted by the institution

  2. Must hold an English language qualification with a minimum IELTS score of 5.5

  3. Clear the medical examination by a DG Shipping-approved doctor as per ILO standard

Course Structure:

  • Pre-Sea Training – 7 Months

    • Awarded Certificate of Higher Education (Nautical Science) upon successful completion

  • On-Board Training – 12 Months

    • Cadets receive a stipend of USD $200–$300 per month during this period

  • Post-Sea Training – 10 Months

    • Awarded Certificate of Competency (COC) as Second Officer from MCA, UK

    • Also awarded Diploma of Higher Education (Dip HE) in Nautical Science from LJMU upon successful completion

Course Commencement:

  • January and July every year

Sponsorship Requirement:

This is a fully sponsored course for onboard training. Sponsorship guarantees placement on ships during the onboard training phase, which is a mandatory requirement for obtaining your COC.
